THE REST:

After Kady leaves him at Brakebills South, Penny takes it hard, though he doesn't show it. He returns, with the others in his class, to Brakebills proper, annnnnd promptly gets stabbed by Eliot's Beast-possessed boyfriend. Of course, the Beast-possessed boyfriend was going for Quentin, but Penny's stupid hero complex got in the way, and he had to go and intercept the knife-wielding maniac. The end result: poison from the blade very nearly killing him. But he's saved by Quentin, who figures out how to break the curse on the poison. Next, we see Penny heading with the gang to England, to the house of Christopher Plover (author of the Fillory books), to figure out who the Beast might be and how to get to Fillory. After they successfully retrieve a button that can teleport them to Fillory, Penny decides to touch it like an idiot and winds up innnn: The Neitherlands, a nexus to other worlds. With some help from Alice and Quentin (performing a round of sex magic), Penny's able to find his way back to Earth from the Neitherlands. Once Penny's back on Earth, though, the Beast uses Penny's psychic abilities against him, putting noise and voices (and the sounds of Victoria's torture) in his head to try to drive him insane. It turns out, the Beast's doing this to every Traveler on Earth in an attempt at getting one to come surrender themselves to him. Instead, they start committing suicide in an attempt to make the torment stop. Penny, for his part, resorts to self-medicating, leading to an accidental overdose that lands him in the infirmary. Luckily, they're at least able to give him a patch to temporarily shield his mind from outside noise.

After that, they all decide it's time to learn some battle magic, to try to take on the Beast on his own turf in Fillory. During this time, Penny bonds with Alice, as they're the only two with enough sense to try to master battle magic without any dangerous shortcuts. And she also has revenge-sex with him after Quentin cheats on her by having a threeway with Eliot and Margo. It's a long story that's largely irrelevant to Penny, WHO HAS NO TIME FOR THEIR DRAMA, BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO GET TO FILLORY TO SLAY THE BEAST AND RESCUE VICTORIA. Remember Victoria? She's important to Penny. He teleports Quentin, Alice, Eliot, and Margo to the Neitherlands, so that they can reach the portal to Fillory, but thanks to some complications, Quentin gets knocked back to Earth, and the group picks up Josh Hoberman (a Brakebills student who's been trapped in the Neitherlands for two weeks by his perception, and two years in Earth time) along the way to Fillory. Also Penny successfully cast a battle magic spell against an assailant, and though he's horrified (BECAUSE HE KILLED HER AND HE'S NEVER KILLED ANYONE BEFORE) he doesn't have any time to dwell on it before they all jump into the portal to Fillory.

In Fillory, Penny tries to keep the group focused on the task at hand. Eventually, he manages to rescue Victoria (and another prisoner, who turns out to be Christopher Plover, but none of this is particularly relevant to Penny's story), but when it comes time to face the Beast, he... gets his hands sliced off. It's agonizing. But though the Beast escapes, Penny and the others are revived and able to regroup. Penny gets the joy of carrying A BOX CONTAINING HIS HANDS to a magical river, where they're sewn back on and become healed as he jumps into the water. But, when the river's keeper, the River Watcher, requests a generous tip for his help, Penny rebuffs him and launches into a tirade about shifty con artists like him. Which results in the River Watcher cursing his newly healed hands, unbeknownst to Penny. After a few more misadventures (during which Penny gets some help to temporarily stop his hands from acting out), they all try to kill the Beast one more time. Again, it's a clusterfuck, as Penny's hands go totally wild and he's off dealing with THAT and some uncontrollable teleportation while the others face the Beast. They manage to defeat the Beast, but at the cost of Alice. Penny manages to find his way back to Fillory, weeks later, to find a somber Margo, who informs him that though the Beast is dead, Quentin's badly injured, and Alice is dead.

CR AU: N/A

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?: As much as Penny hates to admit it, he's a good person, and it sucks. He's got the whole 'jerk with a heart of gold' thing going for him. For somebody who can be bullheaded, aggressive, and aloof, Penny's got a strength of character that drives him, grumbling, towards acts of heroism, at the risk of his own safety, life, and freedom. He will dive right into the path of a knife-wielding maniac to save even Quentin, who he'd hardly call a friend. When he sees (via astral projection) and hears (via psychic abilities) Victoria, a fellow Traveler and total stranger, being held captive in a dungeon, he does what he can to rescue her, refusing to leave her to the Beast. He only agrees to a probable suicide mission (go to Fillory, defeat the Beast) on the condition that they rescue her, and once they're on their way with the quest, Penny never loses sight of Victoria.

Strength is a characteristic that tends to define Penny; he's had to become tough inside and out to survive on his own from a young age. A natural offshoot of that is street smarts and independence, pretty typical in the "I WAS RAISED ON THE STREETS" archetype, but Penny's mental strengths go beyond raw cleverness. Sure, he can recognize tricks and loopholes when having his mettle tested (such as when, while others struggle with the second of the Trials, he figures out the key to completing it: teamwork to divide the tasks to play to their respective strengths, rather than each of them going at their tasks alone), but he's also shown possessing academic intelligence/book smarts. He'll make references to things learned in class (indicating he pays more attention than some characters), pores over books when he's got something to research, and works hard practicing and training in spellwork and his other gifts.

Though Penny is a loner-- or, at least, he was a loner before Brakebills-- he's shockingly adept at being a team player. He'll set aside grudges and ego to work with others for the greater good, because the big picture's more important than his own feelings. Much as he wants to keep to himself and stay out of everyone's drama, he finds that he just can't sit back and do nothing. He's also capable of developing genuine emotional attachments to others, which leads to a loyalty so strong that he'll do just about anything for the handful of people closest to him, particularly Kady, who he pretty quickly falls in love with. He can also respect intelligence and talent, which is most notable in his friendship with Alice, one of the few people he's shown actually bonding with without any posturing. Even before he gets to know Alice, he tells Kady not to make fun of her while she's demonstrating magic, admiring her skill.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?: So, all those strengths of Penny's? They're buried under layers and layers of rudeness, aggression, sarcasm, and outright hostility that can sometimes border on bullying. It's not an exaggeration to call Penny an asshole, and it wouldn't be an incorrect assessment. Penny's pretty much the poster child for the whole 'hurt them before they get a chance to hurt you' way of thinking, which only perpetuates the loneliness that's characterized the vast majority of his life. Penny's abrasive to the point of being seriously off-putting to people, and this is only made worse when he loses his temper. His rudeness has-- on more than one occasion-- led to actual consequences. The biggest one being when he wound up with cursed hands after going off on a magical River Watcher for being a shady scam artist, rather than taking a more diplomatic route when dealing with him. After Penny realizes his hands have been cursed, he finds the River Watcher and tries to apologize, but is basically told to go fuck himself because it's time to learn that his actions have consequences.

Speaking of diplomacy, Penny has zero diplomacy skills. It can be difficult for those who can see past the swaggering and posturing to take him all that seriously, and there's been more than one occasion where his attempt at Tough Guying-- or seducing-- his way through a situation leads to people laughing in his face or calling him out. As one character puts it, after rebuffing him: "You're a touch emotionally insecure, for which you compensate heavily with boisterousness and foul language." That's Penny in a nutshell.

Though Penny is perfectly capable of opening up about his feelings with a small handful of people, with most others, he can be pretty emotionally constipated. Anger is a comfortable emotion. So is exasperation. What he's not skilled at articulating is grief or loss, which leads to others buying into his 'I don't give a fuck' act during moments when he could actually use a friend. As a result, few (if any) people realize when he's actually hurting, and will write him off as being totally fine when he actually isn't. At one point, he even tries to be genuine with Quentin (whom he spends most of his time antagonizing) over Alice's death, but fails to say anything more than an awkward, "It sucks about Alice," prompting an argument over just how much he actually cared about her.

Though he recently has started to accept his abilities, recognizing how they can be an asset, Penny's spent much of his life running away from his gifts. The amount of power he possesses can be terrifying, and it likely fuels some of his negative personality traits. He's stronger when he embraces who he is and what he's capable of, but for years, he had a nasty habit of pushing away others and self-medicating to dangerous, destructive degrees in order to try to find reprieve from the voices in his head (thanks, psychic abilities). Though he isn't currently engaging in this behavior (having finally accepted his abilities), it's a habit that he may fall back on if things start to get too far out of his control.

WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?: 1. Being a psychic has impacted Penny more than anything else in his life. It's not known when he started to hear voices in his head, but being an untrained psychic meant that he could hear the feedback from everybody around him, always, unless he took measures (such as pills, drugs, or alcohol) to try to stop it. His relationship with his family is nonexistent, and he's been on his own from a young age, and it's likely that his powers are the reason for this. He fell into a loner, transient lifestyle, refusing to make connections with others.

2. Penny had no friends growing up, except for one: the voice in his head-- the only clear, comforting one that stood out from the noise-- that claimed to be a Magician. This was, in fact, the voice of the Beast, though Penny had no idea. The Beast helped guide him through his life, taught him about magic and how to work some spells and build up his defenses against the constant onslaught of voices. The voice saved him many times growing up, and it helped him become strong, rather than crumble under the weight of his powers. Much of his personality and outlook has likely been shaped by it.
NOTE: When Penny had nobody else in the world, the Beast taught him about magic, feeding into his curiosity and motivating him to learn more. This likely dovetailed into the independence he started to cultivate when the constant stream of voices in his head drove a wedge between him and everybody around him. Given the Beast's manipulative nature (and the fact that when we do finally see him in the flesh, he's shown to be charming and persuasive), and the fact that he was setting Penny up to trust him completely (to the point where Penny unquestioningly follows the Beast's suggestions until he realizes that the 'friendly voice' is actually completely malevolent and has been duping him ~his entire life~), it's implied that the Beast probably fueled Penny's isolation and mistrust of others. There was likely a lot of "I'm the only one who understands you," "I'm your only friend," "You can't trust anyone but me," "Only I can help you protect yourself" etc. as Penny was growing up. Basically he was being groomed to be the Beast's pawn since childhood, and though he breaks free of his trust and 'friendship' with the Beast, the effects of its influence are still there in his prickly, stand-offish personality and his reluctance to trust and rely on others, though he starts to come around the longer he's in Brakebills.

3. Getting accepted into magical grad school marked a turning point for Penny. At Brakebills, he finally started to receive formal training in magic, which has helped him to begin embracing his powers and utilizing them in constructive ways. More importantly, though, Brakebills offered a sort of stability, a place for him to meet people like him and not bail before he can make any connections with others. At Brakebills, he's fallen in love (with Kady), and has actually made (gasp) friends. Well, sort of. Quentin, Alice, Margo, and Eliot aren't quite friends, so much as... the closest thing he has to family. He doesn't get along with them, and he still hates just about everyone, but he's there for them, and he's not alone anymore. These relationships will be what really drive him moving forward in his life.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?: Though he'll never admit it, choosing instead to give off a ~bad boy~ persona, Penny's got a serious hero complex, driven by his strong sense of right and wrong. Penny's moral compass drives most of his actions, and for as much as he acts like he doesn't give a shit about anything, he cannot and will not stand by and do nothing when there's something he can do to affect the outcome, even at great cost to himself. Hell, even if it's somebody he hates, like Quentin (who he could've left under a sleeping curse, but instead immediately chooses to alert the others to what's going on) or Julia (who, admittedly, he mostly helps for Kady's sake, but admits that psycho rapist monsters-- like the one Julia's trying to kill-- are a universal problem, so it's... sort of a moral imperative to help stop them). Even a complete stranger who he owes nothing to, he'll go out of his way to try to rescue from a dungeon. When he finally saves Victoria, a fellow Traveler who'd been imprisoned and tortured by the Beast, he shows an uncharacteristic softness and sincerity when he tells her that he'd wanted to help her so badly, and tries to apologize for not being able to rescue her sooner.

WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?: To most people, Penny comes across as an asshole who doesn't care about anyone. He's got a bad attitude, a brusque, aloof and hostile, borderline aggressive, exterior, and seems more interested in being a dick than in anything else. Oh, and he's a grouchy misanthrope who hates everything.

Because he's so outspoken and direct about most things, it's generally assumed that with Penny, what you see is what you get. He's seen as emotionally untouchable, like he doesn't experience the more vulnerable emotions that come with being human. When Kady leaves him, he tells people he's fine, that he doesn't give a shit, and nobody questions it. Other people's impression of Penny and anything approaching pain or vulnerability can be summed up by a remark made by Quentin: "You know, it's Penny. He's fireproof." Penny's always fine, nothing to see here!

IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?: I could say that Penny's really a sensitive soul, and he only pretends to be an asshole, but... No, he really is an asshole. He's not mean to Quentin because he secretly respects him and this is how he shows affection; he's mean to him because Quentin actually pisses him off. It's just that Penny's an asshole who is capable of a lot more depth of feeling than people give him credit for. Though he loves Kady, most assume he's indifferent to her leaving him (and leaving Brakebills). Alice, too, he cares about and respects, and he's shaken enough when he learns of her death that he can't bring himself to do or say anything besides walk out of the room. And yet, it's assumed that he didn't really care about her. Given his general demeanor, which would lead most to assume he's a selfish dick who's only looking out for #1, the fact that he has a hero complex and generally tries to do the right thing may be a surprise, too, to those who haven't had a chance to get to know him (which is to say: just about everyone).

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?: With SWEAR WORDS AND GROUCHINESS. And also a fuckton of determination. There was a time when Penny was more likely to consider cutting and running, either by actually peacing out of a crisis, or by drugging/drinking himself to the point of hindering his abilities. Lately, however (since learning to embrace his gifts and finding himself stuck with this troublemaking found family of his), Penny tends to face adversity head-on, with stubborn determination. He's a team player who can set aside his annoyances, grudges, and personal feelings to work together with others in the name of saving individuals/Fillory/THE UNIVERSE. Penny can be extremely focused when it comes to dealing with a crisis, less given to distractions than the others, and will bounce bounce back from physical injuries and plow through emotional pain to get the job done. He's even willing to sacrifice his freedom for others.

But he will still complain about everything always.

WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:
1. He's a psychic magician who can teleport.
2. Quentin's a whiny little bitch.
3. Eliot and Margo are... High King and Queen of Fillory? What the fuck's a Fillory...
4. He's in love with a girl. But he doesn't remember her name or any details about her to start. Just what she looks like and his feelings for her.
5. He actually considers Alice Quinn a friend.

The first memory was selected so that Penny doesn't spend his first few weeks in game freaking out about hearing voices in his head. Being a psychic with no knowledge or control over his powers would just be a disaster. Same with his abilities as a Traveler. The last thing he needs is to start teleporting around uncontrollably, because BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, IT'S NOT FUN.

As for memories 2-5, those were selected because his relationships with the others (not necessarily friendships) have had such a huge impact on the person he's grown into since his acceptance into Brakebills. These are people he can't/won't cut and run from, the few attachments he has in the world. Though they may not all be in Wayward Pines, his memories/impressions of them will be something to keep him a bit grounded as he starts out, and keep him from going right back into isolated loner mode.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:

SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES: Penny's a magician! And, because he works his ass off in his studies and practices, he's a pretty skillful magician. In the world of The Magicians, magic isn't this effortless thing that anybody with innate talent can harness with a little bit of guidance. It requires intelligence, drive, cleverness, patience, and a ton of academic and practical training. Annnnd it's basically fueled by inner pain. The more trauma and unhappiness you've got within you, the more powerful you are.

A skilled magician can do a hell of a lot with magic, and they can be aided by sigils (on the ground, on paper, or even on the body), potions and concoctions, magical tools, and other materials. Spells are also affected by Circumstances, such as altitude, the phase of the moon, the nearest body of water, the stars, etc. Basically: ridiculously complex, and magicians have to be able to reach a point where they can factor in the effects of the Circumstances as they cast, without thinking. They must also master complex hand/finger choreography, unique to each spell, to cast. A magician without the use of their hands is pretty much out of luck, unless they want to try resorting to other branches of magic (like sex magic or... sphincter magic). Given the versatility of magic, it's not really easy to outline what it can and can't do, but some examples of magic's uses include creating flames, opening locks, bending light, warding locations, "seeing" magic, creating shields, and more!

NOW. ON TOP OF THAT. Penny's Discipline as a magician is Traveler, which is an extremely rare (and powerful and extra dangerous) offshoot of the Psychic Discipline. What this means is: not only can Penny read minds (whether he wants to or not), but he can also transport himself (and others, with the sigil tattoos on his fingers) to other locations. On the plus side: there are no real limitations to where a Traveler can go. They are truly free in a way that nobody else is, capable of going to any country, any world, and even other realities and universes. The downside is: there are no real limitations to where a Traveler can go. Make one mistake, get a little sloppy, and you can wind up at the bottom of the ocean, inside a volcano, in a world without oxygen, eaten by a giant monster on a hostile planet... and so on. Travelers tend to have a very short life expectancy.

One of the safer skills Penny possesses as a Traveler is astral projection. Which is about the same thing as regular Traveling, except that it's just his mind/spirit that's going places, while his body's safely wherever he left it. When he astral projects, he's basically a ghost-- most will never see or sense him, but certain powerful entities (like the Beast) can. Additionally, Penny can travel into people's dreams and interact with them in the dreams, which he and everyone else in the show naturally refers to as ~incepting~, because they're a bunch of dorks. While incepting people, Penny can only interact with the dreamer, and not their dream versions of other people. He uses this to both be useful and communicate/problem solve with people and to bang his girlfriend when they're in separate worlds/planes of existence. You know, as you do.

This means he knows what you dream about, and he is absolutely judging you.

Other various skills he possesses: he can throw a punch and hold his own in a non-magical fight, and he knows how to catch fish, because he grew up in Florida.

Now, for weaknesses, Penny has about your typical physical weaknesses that come with being a meatsack human being. He's mortal, and he can be gravely injured and killed the same way any other person can. Oh, and he recently got his hands chopped off by the Beast, reattached via a magical healing river, and then CURSED by the River Watcher because Penny went off on him in a big, ranting tirade, and accused him of being a con artist. So now Penny's hands are basically pulling the magical equivalent of Idle Hands: when he tries to cast a spell, they'll cast the wrong spell. When he tries to punch somebody, his hands will offer to shake theirs. When he's trying to hold a conversation, his hands will start throwing punches or firing off spells willy nilly. IT'S A MAJOR HINDRANCE, IT'S A RISK TO HIS LIFE AND OTHERS', AND HE'S GONNA NEED SOMEBODY TO HEAL HIS GODDAMN HANDS SOON.

INVENTORY: This outfit and NOTHING ELSE.
